A federal judge in Dallas has granted Pastor Chuck Swindoll's Insight for Living Ministries a temporary exemption from fines for not providing employees with certain birth control coverage.

Swindoll's ministry considers the use of some contraceptive methods as forms of abortion, which violates their religious convictions.

Insight for Living Ministries was represented by Liberty Institute. Attorney Matthew Kacsmaryk said the court allowed an expedited hearing because IFLM would have been forced to pay fines on Dec. 1 for not accepting mandated contraception coverage.

"We are very encouraged by today's outcome. This is an important victory for faith-based ministries that seek to provide life-affirming healthcare insurance for all their employees," Kacsmaryk said.

"IFLM believes it is a religious imperative to provide healthcare insurance and defend unborn human life. Under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the federal government cannot force IFLM to choose between these two religious beliefs," he added.

This is one of several similar cases moving through federal courts at the moment.
